In the historic and lively Kern's Food Hall of Knoxville...
there's a boutique where joy, inclusivity, and empowerment weave their way into every detail. Mae Lee's Boutique isn’t just a clothing store—it’s a celebration of individuality, style, and confidence. From its carefully curated collection of women’s clothing and accessories to the positive energy that fills the space, Mae Lee’s is truly something special.
Owner and founder Kristen Heath created Mae Lee's Boutique with a clear mission: to provide stylish, comfortable clothing that fits and flatters all women, especially those in mid and plus sizes who often feel overlooked in mainstream fashion. Mae Lee's sources from women-owned vendors and features several local makers, ensuring every piece tells a story and supports a community.
The Spark Behind Mae Lee’s
The inspiration for Mae Lee's Boutique came from a deeply personal place. Kristen wanted to fill a gap in Knoxville’s fashion scene—a boutique that didn’t just offer beautiful clothing but also celebrated inclusivity and empowered women to step out of their comfort zones.
“I wanted a boutique in Knoxville that had clothes I liked and that actually fit me,” Kristen shares. “I knew other mid and plus-size girls were looking for the same thing. I also wanted to create a positive space that encourages people to try something new.”
That vision has become the beating heart of Mae Lee's. It’s a place where women of all sizes can walk in and feel celebrated for who they are, not who they’re "supposed" to be.
A Boutique Built on Connection
One of Kristen's favorite memories is a perfect example of what makes Mae Lee's so unique. “One day, I had three different groups of women in the store, all trying on clothes. They weren’t just hyping up their friends—they were complimenting the other groups too! It was so beautiful, and I got emotional after they left. THAT is why I opened Mae Lee's.”
That spirit of encouragement and empowerment is woven into everything Mae Lee's stands for. The boutique’s three guiding words—inclusive, unique, thoughtful—shine through in every interaction, every product, and every decision.
Overcoming Challenges with Grace
Like many small businesses, Mae Lee's Boutique faced its share of challenges, especially with the delays caused by the pandemic. Originally slated to open in the fall of 2020, Mae Lee's doors didn’t officially open until 4 ½ years later.
“Learning how to restructure my business and goals while waiting was tough,” Kristen recalls. “There were so many times I thought about giving up, but seeing the store open after all that time was a huge moment for me.”
And the joy continues every time someone steps through the doors and shares how much they love the boutique. “Those moments make my heart swell with pride.”
Creating a Lasting Impact
Mae Lee’s Boutique is more than a store—it’s a space for connection and community. Kristen hopes to be a role model for anyone struggling with self-confidence, offering a space where every person feels beautiful and valued. The boutique also gives back, including donations to hurricane relief and fundraising efforts for causes like wigs for individuals with medical conditions.
Looking ahead, Kristen has big dreams for Mae Lee's. While her focus is on growing the boutique’s impact, she’s already imagining future possibilities like opening a kids’ boutique called Mini Mae’s.
Supporting Mae Lee’s Boutique
The boutique’s motto, “She’s not an ordinary girl,” perfectly reflects the women who walk through its doors. Shopping at Mae Lee’s isn’t just about finding your next favorite outfit—it’s about supporting a business that celebrates individuality, empowers women, and gives back to the community.
“I’m grateful every single day that I get to do this,” Kristen says. “Every purchase, even something as small as a pair of socks, helps keep this dream alive, and I can’t thank my customers enough.”
