but every now and then, someone comes along whose music carries an undeniable sense of soul, sincerity, and storytelling. Kristan Mikala is one of those rare artists. A gifted musician and songwriter, Kristan blends heartfelt lyrics with melodies that stay with you long after the music stops. Her work offers a deeply personal touch that resonates with listeners everywhere.

I first met Kristan while photographing Emisunshine and Fish Fisher’s songwriters retreat in Gatlinburg...


held at the historic Gatlinburg Inn. That place has its own special vibe—after all, "Rocky Top" was written there! The retreat was such a memorable experience. Getting to be a fly on the wall while songs came to life right in front of me was something I’ll never forget. Watching the artists share their stories and collaborate was truly inspiring.

Even in that creative space filled with talent, Kristan stood out. From the moment I heard her voice and songwriting, I was completely sold. Her talent is undeniable.

But then I got to know her better. When I discovered how witty she is, her love of dogs, and her hilariously strong meme game, I was doubly in. Kristan isn’t just an incredible artist—she’s also the kind of person who makes every interaction a little brighter and a lot more fun.

So, when Kristan asked me to come to Nashville to photograph her and her husband, Ken, I jumped at the chance. At first, I thought I was there simply to do a promo session for her music. But when I arrived, I learned they had quietly gotten married the day before! The session took an unexpected turn in the very best way, as it became a celebration of their love and this beautiful secret they let me in on. It was such a joy and an honor to capture those moments, knowing I was part of something so special.

The session was filled with their personalities—


Kristan's playful wit and Ken's calm, supportive presence. Their easygoing nature and sense of humor made every moment feel natural and effortless. We wandered through some of their favorite spots in the city, allowing the spirit of Music City to frame their love and partnership.

Kristan and Ken’s dynamic is something special. Their bond is as inspiring as the songs Kristan writes—full of depth, humor, and mutual respect. During the session, it was impossible not to notice how much they uplift each other, both as a couple and as creative individuals.

For me, photography is about more than just the images; it’s about the stories they tell. Capturing Kristan and Ken together felt like documenting a song in visual form—a harmony of love, life, and artistry.

Kristan’s music is an extension of her heart, and she’s dedicated to creating pieces that connect with others on a deep level. Whether she’s performing on stage, writing for herself, or collaborating with other artists, Kristan brings a fresh voice to Nashville’s iconic music scene.

It was a privilege to spend time with Kristan and Ken, witnessing firsthand the love they share and the artistry that Kristan pours into everything she does. As a photographer, moments like these remind me why I love what I do—celebrating life’s most beautiful connections and stories.
